Im sure you guys have seen this a few different places but I just wanted to say I am all the bleeding edge of technology but what in the world is this. We can officially put a bullet in QR Codes, we should be moving things forward not making older technology bigger (*cough Detroit *cough).

Hope everyone is enjoying the Holidays. I just finished wrapping my gifts and updating the main site in time for the New Years Day launch.

I have been house bound for the last few days because of some snow, anything over an inch or two usually shuts down the city.

I have been watching movies the last days and noticed the only reason I buy DVD’s these days is for the bonus features. There are two types of bonus features, the goods ones are shot while the film is being made and the bad ones are made after the fact to sell the DVD.

The same idea can be applied to today’s advertising campaigns and too many agencies are doing it the wrong way.

A lot of agencies start to worry about the digital components well after they finish television, radio and  everyone’s new favorite Hulu ads. Before you ask the answer is NO, Hulu ads do not count as digital. Oh and while we are on the subject of what counts, microsites are on that list too but that’s another post.

These day campaigns seem to sprinkle on some digital to their campaigns to either help sell it to clients and/or add it to their portfolio. Many of these ideas are being led by the technology and not the idea. So if Augmented Reality is the topic of the week at the agency luncheon you better believe all the new digital ideas will have AR.

Instead the digital portions of the campaign need to come much earlier in the process. Im going to get crap for saying it but it should be on the table from the get go. It needs to be a part of the “big idea” rather then a “check box”. (Apologies for the cliche full sentence) Just like the Bonus Features in DVDs if the digital is thought out throughout the making of the idea it will be a stronger piece and be able to contribute more to the overall campaign.

There have been grumblings out there that digital is in fact not working that well and that users aren’t participating, but have you ever stopped and thought that maybe the digital components aren’t doing well because you thought of the idea over the lunch break or that you left it up to the intern to make the F page for widget inc. It is like the crappy DVD features done after the movie is done. Like the slide show or the interview with the key grip, sure its content but nothing anybody cares about.

So next time you are working on a campaign make sure digital is thought about at the beginning and throughout the process, you’d be surprised how tight a campaign can get if you plan everything from the get go.

Towards the end of DinosaurKillers V1.0 updates were sporadic and lacked a lot of the beefy content that all our readers were craving. We promise to put content before everyday updates. Daily updates are watered down and people hold back details so they can spread the story across multiple posts. Not here.

Too many people ask questions on twitter and a bunch of hacks respond or no one at all. The purpose of the new DinosaurKillers is to let people help one another out, otherwise we aren’t going to move forward and all the progress being made right now will become nothing more then a blip on the advertising timeline.

I promise DinosaurKillers will not be another person screaming print is dead or that AR is the wave of the future. The canvas has gotten much bigger and people need to learn what works and what doesn’t. The industry is changing and we want to help.
